What is a MIM?
The MIM is a structured technique for observing and assessing relationships between caregivers and child, or whole families. It consists of a series of playful tasks using Theraplay® techniques designed to elicit behaviours to evaluate the attachment relationship.
The MIM assessor will observe, structure, nurture, engagement, and challenges.
-
The MIM assessor will observe: boundaries in the relationship,
-
Levels of control,
-
Parent and child attunement,
-
Families' perceptions of relationships,
-
Quality of support.

Who is it appropriate for?
The MIM assessment is appropriate for all types of families, including, but not limited to: single-parent families, traditional families, LGBTQIA+ families, adoption and fostering, as well as Kinship carers and SGO'S. suitable for children from infants up to adolescence,

Why choose a MIM?
MIM's highlight strengths as well as difficulties in relationships. MIM assessments can be scored, so they can be used in reports or for evidence, for example, in court cases, or for social services.
MIM assessments are Theraplay® based.
Theraplay® is a form of play therapy that seeks to develop secure attachments within families.
The MIM is a valuable tool in planning therapy and in determining how to help families strengthen their relationships. While the MIM provides useful information about the way people interact, it is important that other assessments be taken into account when major decisions, such as a change of placement or permanent placement, are being considered.
